We listed our house for sale this past week! It’s been a fun and exciting month as we prepared our house to sell but it was also exhausting!
We worked for 4 weeks straight and did a pretty big renovation to our house…and we did all the work ourselves! Jason and I know NOTHING about house projects and so we were very proud of ourselves for how much we did.
Here’s a quick list of some of the projects we worked on:
- We scrapped the popcorn ceiling off of every ceiling
- We retextured and painted the ceilings
- The scraping and retexturing destroys the walls so we repainted every wall in the house
- We also painted every baseboard and door in the house
- We took the carpet out of the living room and extended the tile into the living room (laying tile is no joke!)
- We removed the carpet from the rest of the house and put in laminate
- We updated some light fixtures and a few other things like that along way
- I also went through the house and decluttered about 80% of the stuff we own ?
We were exhausted from all the work but we saved so much money in the process and our house looks amazing! We’ve been on the market for a week and are hopeful that we will get an offer soon.
Our House Renovation Tour
The Living Room:
The living room feels so open and fresh with the tile throughout.
The Hallway:
The hallway turned out beautifully! The hallway leads right from the main kitchen/living room area so I love how pretty it looks now leading to the bedrooms…especially with the new floors ?It looks so much better than the carpet!
Master bedroom/boys room:
The master bedroom looks awesome! This used to be our room before we moved into the big back room (see below). Now all 4 boys share it and it works great.
Schoolroom:
The school room has been a huge headache for me. It ends up being the dumping ground for everything extra which means I can’t use it for what I really need: Organizing our homeschool resources so I can easily get to them. I have some thoughts on this down below…
Our bedroom:
This is my favorite part of our house! The owners before use converted it from the garage into this huge room. It’s been difficult at times not having very much storage with no garage, but the space inside well makes up for it!
For some of these I’m kicking myself that I didn’t get a real “before” shot. Several of these are “during” shots when we had the house pulled apart. But you get the idea 😉 This is inside our bedroom. This is mine and Jason’s desks and work spaces.
And to the left of our desks is our bed.
And in front of our bed is my favorite part – our little seating area. We sit and read here many evenings together! ?
Random areas:
I didn’t get a before pictures of a couple of areas! The image on the left is our closet area we made in our bedroom and it turned out so good! And the image on the right is Magnolia’s bedroom.
What I learned doing our house renovation:
I would not call myself a minimalist. I like books way too much to be a real minimalist 😉 But in order to have our house truly show ready, I paired down our stuff by a good 60-80% and it shows!
More Open
The house feels so much more open! It’s amazing how a room can suddenly feel twice as big when you take out half the stuff! Every single room in our house feels bigger now.
Easier to Maintain
This has been the single biggest benefit! We have to keep our house show ready right now with 5 little kids…and that’s hard! But with the house so decluttered and simplified…it’s been incredibly easy to keep the house show ready. I wish I had done this simplifying years ago!
Simpler
Plus…the house just feels simpler! There are less toys to play with…so of course the kids play more with the toys that we do have. It’s much easier to pick out clothes for church on Sunday when there are only a few choices. The kitchen is easier to keep organized when every single thing has a place to go.
It’s been a good lesson for me to keep the house this simplified and it’s definitely one that I will be taking with us into the next adventure and into our next house.
