An Added Blessing {1+1=4?}

on July 18, 2012 by Jami Balmet 0 comments

We are pregnant with our first baby, due January 17, 2013. I had my first ultrasound at 11 weeks. We got to see our precious baby for the first time.

We were overjoyed to see our baby for the first time! We got to see him/her jump and move around so amazing. Right before entering the ultrasound room I told the doctor that my Dad is a twin and we were kinda of hoping it could be twins

My doctor told me that my Dad being a twin doesn’t have much to do with it. We got into the ultrasound and saw it was one baby and forgot about my “twin” theory right away. The doctor said “Well only one baby. Although it’s rare,  a second baby could be hiding and may show up later”. She said this as if she didn’t believe it, and neither did we. We were content with our beautiful one baby 🙂

Fast forward a few weeks and I’m now 13 weeks pregnant. I came in for our second ultrasound on Monday 7/16 just to make sure baby was doing okay and to measure to confirm the due date.

I was excited to get to see our baby again. But my husband just started a new job and can’t take off that much time so I told him he didn’t need to come to this ultrasound since he was just at one 2 weeks ago. He was going to come to the next one instead (where we find out the gender).

BIG mistake. My husband should have been there. We get ready for the ultrasound and the doctor touches my stomach with the wand, before I look at the screen she asks me if I have already had an ultrasound with this pregnancy.

Yes 🙂 She responds “Okay good, so you know it’s two?” TWO? “Yes, two.” TWINS??

And sure enough…there are two sweet and precious babies growing inside my tummy.

I got to see both precious babies moving and jumping around inside. Apparently it is extremely rare for twins to be missed on an ultrasound but I guess it happens lol.

The really funny part is that for YEARS, I have been saying that I am going to have twin girls. I remember a couple years ago when my hubby and I seriously started talking about having kids, my mom and I researched the likelihood of me having twins. Fraternal twins (non-identical) are genetic and get passed down through the generations. We found out that twins tend to skip a generation (my grandmother had twins, skipped my dad’s generation and comes back with my generation).

But even with that, no one else in my family has had twins and it was extremely unlikely. Plus twins are more common if you have had multiple children (this is our first), are older (I’m 22), and are overweight (I’m not). The chances of twins was still extremely low. I just always got it into my head that I wanted twins and always said I would lol. The Lord does answer prayers.

The really incredible part about this is the significance to our family. My Dad lost his twin when they were 17 years old. In a tragic accident, my grandmother lost her youngest son of 6 children and my Dad lost his best friend and his twin. It has always been very hard on my family and there is something very beautiful about my Dad’s oldest child and only daughter having twins.

Guess I need to change this picture:

And I know that we have some twin mommies out there so I need your help! Do you have any good twin blogs you read? Or books and articles? Please pass them on, I need to start preparing 😀
