Our Love Story {Part Three}: Our Engagement Story

on May 15, 2014 by Jami Balmet 0 comments

Our fifth wedding anniversary is coming up in just a few days. So I decided to re-post our love story. Young Wife’s Guide is dedicated to encouraging YOU where you are and I thought you might like to see a little bit of our story…Go back and read part one and part two.

In marriage, I think it’s so important to take time and look back over your own love story. I love reflecting on these sweet moments. At the young ages of 18 and 20, we decided it was time to jump into this new adventure called engagement. Here’s out how it happened…

our engagement story..

Our beginnings

We met when I was 16 and he was 18. We started dating when I was 17 and he was 19.

We started dating and for a few months we took it slow. I was more reserved and didn’t get too attached too quickly. (I think he was attached from day one haha).

We spent a few months getting to know each other better and getting to know our families. We bonded over our love of books and grew to like and know each other even better. We were steadily falling in love.

Then the summer after we started dating we took two college classes together. Because they were shorter classes we met Monday through Thursday. So every morning we got into a routine. We would meet at his house and drive to the college. He would sometimes surprise me with coffee and we would always do lunch together.

It was a wonderful summer together and that’s when I knew I loved him. Over the next several months our love grew and we quickly started talking about marriage (even before I had graduated high school)!

College together

That year we also had to decide what to do about college. I was graduating high school and he was finishing up his two years at a community college. I had a Christian college set in my heart and he decided to go as well. We both applied and got in and started making the plans.

Then in August 2008 we moved eight hours away from our family to go to college. I lived in the dorms that first year and he lived in an apartment on campus. In October, we had a day off which meant a three day weekend. We decided to drive home and visit our family.

This was a very special trip for us because it was the first trip home since moving to college. At this point we had already talked about marriage and that we wanted to get married the next summer. And I MAY have picked out the ring already 😉 but I didn’t know when the proposal was coming.

I knew it was coming any day just didn’t know when! So anyway we went home to visit family. On Saturday we decided to go to the park and play frisbee with his family. While at the park he was being very sweet and suggested that we go on a walk down by the river.

His question and my answer

He asked to go for a walk down by the river and I gave him a hard time because I thought we should spend this three day weekend with just family. I didn’t understand why he wanted to go for a walk just the two of us when we were there to be with family! But everyone insisted that it was fine. So off we went on a walk down by the river.

We walked for a while and talked and then he stopped. He got down on one knee and spun me around. I looked at him and didn’t think he was serious. He had tried to trick me before to throw me off the trail ;). I thought he was joking!

And then he popped the question. I of course said yes, I cried a bit, we sat by the river for a few minutes completely blissful!

Then we walked back to his family who had sparkling cider and treats ready. It was a wonderful and beautiful proposal.

Here we are right after he proposed. Can you tell I was crying?? lol

And here are his siblings with us right after.

Over our Thanksgiving break we went back to the river and had our engagement pictures taken. Now every time we go to the river to play frisbee with family it is so special to us.
