Setting Goals in your Home so you can Stay on Task & Focused!

In gaining control of my home this summer, I’ve been learning how to say NO to opportunities because I’ve made a personal priorities list. My priorities list has given me the tools to determine how I should spend my time, and in turn, this has allowed me to create a manageable routine as a homemaker. And today, we are looking at how to set goals for my life and home so I can stay focused and on task.

Having clear goals and objectives in my homemaking, broken down by life, yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily goals, helps me to stay on track in my life so I can make a real impact from within my home.

People sometimes ask me how I do “it all”. I own and write a growing blog, I’m working on a book, I practice hospitality, I’m a wife and mom, and manage my home. How do I do it all? I don’t. If I invited you over to my house then you would plainly see that I’m NOT super-mom or homemaker of the year. And that’s okay. But, having a growing blog has actually helped me to be a more efficient homemaker because I’ve had to make strategic and specific goals when it comes to my homemaker and my blog.

I’ve found that when I wake up, without goals or a direction for my day and week, I bounce around the house not really accomplishing anything. But when I’m working solidly on the computer from 12 – 2 everyday during my twin’s nap time and have a routine and schedule in place for my day, I know I have to get cleaning and cooking done at specific times. I know that from 10 – 12, I’m working on various projects around the house: folding and putting away laundry, doing dishes, organizing the twin’s room, cleaning out my fridge, etc.

Having clear goals, objectives, and things I want to accomplish in my homemaking, broken down by life, yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily goals, helps me to stay on track in my life and in my homemaking so I can make a real impact from within my home.

Setting Goals for Your Life & Homemaking

You are welcome to follow along this study without buying the book, but if you want to dive deeper into making goals (with some fantastic help from Crystal), then I highly recommend you get your own copy of Say Goodbye to Survival Mode! Today we are going to focus on developing (and writing down your goals) and on Thursday we will break those down into actionable items so we can make these goals a reality!

Set Realistic Goals

This is one of my biggest struggles with setting goals. I’m a dreamer. I dream big and I don’t have any problem with a lack of imagination. If I’m not careful (and if my husband doesn’t step in to tone me down), I will plan and dream huge goals for 20 different things. And there’s no way I can accomplish all of those goals. I will end up failing. And that means I’ll be discouraged to do anything and that’s the opposite of what setting goals is supposed to do. Trust me, I know from experience.

Set goals that will stretch you and force you to grow, but that are actually attainable.

Write Your Goals Down

Spend some time alone, with a yummy cup of coffee, and let your mind wonder and dream. Think through the different areas of your life and really think about some of those big dreams you have (one of mine was to learn the Biblical languages so I could read the Bible in the original Greek and Hebrew). Give yourself some time to really dream and then write those dreams, goals, and aspirations down!! 

Just putting these goals down onto paper can really help! Writing them down makes them feel more real and is a wonderful way to get you excited about your goals (even the boring ones – like paying off debt)!

Here are some areas of your life that you can begin thinking through to set goals:

  • Homemaking
  • Homeschooling
  • Ministry
  • Working from home
  • Exercising
  • Learning how to cook (better)
  • Learning how to bake
  • Organizing
  • Managing your home
  • Education
  • Parenting
  • Your Marriage
  • Finances (paying off debt)

To help get your creative juices flowing, here are a few of my goals I’ve had in the past:

Working From Home

  • Create and film a podcast that I share once a week on my blog
  • Develop, write, and film a Hospitality eCourse to be released in August
  • Post 4 – 5 times a week on my blog and share updates via social media

Exercise & Health

  • Take my vitamins morning and night
  • Go on walks in the evenings with my husband and kids three times a week
  • Do my work out video the other three days a week (no exercise on Sunday)


  • Read my Bible everyday (Read the entire Bible in a year)
  • Complete my summer reading goals (and make new ones for each season)
  • Get my old Hebrew flash cards out and brush up on my Hebrew so I can begin reading Scripture again


  • Always kiss my husband goodnight
  • Go on 2 dates a month
  • Focus on my husband for at least 15 minutes each day (undivided attention)
  • The first thing that happens when he walks in the door at night is a big hug and kiss
  • Regularly read marriage books together

Have fun with your goals, be realistic, and make sure to get your husband involved! Come back on Thursday as we take these goals you’ve made and break them down into manageable pieces so you can actually accomplish these goals you’ve set!
